About
10:00 p.m. Saturday, October 4, James Goodman was pulling out of a
driveway on Layfield Drive when he was blinded by the headlights of
an on-coming car.
Instead
of turning onto the road, Goodman missed the road and slid into a
ditch. The ditch was nearly five feet deep and caused Goodman’s
Nissan Pathfinder to overturn. The SUV came to rest with the left
side doors against the side of the ditch and with the left front
corner of the roof crumpled into the passenger compartment.
The
steering column, front seats, crumpled driver’s door and crushed
roof trapped Goodman in the truck. The passenger, Brigitt Bray, was
able to escape the truck and went for help.
Pine
Mountain firefighters quickly arrived on the scene.
Firefighters JR Owens and Andy Kober, who responded in Squad 12,
were the first firefighters on the scene and entered the overturned
Pathfinder to conduct patient assessment on Goodman while
firefighter Roger Duke radioed the assessment to the responding
Harris County EMS unit.
Firefighters Tim Edgar and Matt Martin, responding in Quint 1201,
ascertained the condition of Bray before assisting in extricating
Goodman.
The
area was extremely dark, and the ladder on Quint 1201 was extended
over the overturned Pathfinder with the halogen lights on the tip
used to illuminate the scene.
Harris
County paramedics David Lane and Shane Owen arrived on the scene and
took over primary patient care.
To
extricate Goodman, the steering column and parts of the seats had to
be removed. Goodman was maneuvered from the front seat to the back
seat and out the right rear door.
Both
Goodman and Bray were treated at the scene and transported to the
Columbus Medical Center. |
