Students from the Florida State University Flying High Circus
climbed to new heights on Pine Mountain’s Quint 1201.
The FSU Flying Circus troupe, which typically includes 25-28
students, are in Pine Mountain and working at Callaway Gardens
during the summer.
While at Callaway Gardens, the students work as high flying
performers and recreational counselors. As part of their skills, the
college students perform a variety of stunts from juggling to flying
on the trapeze. They also teach children, and some adults, trapeze
skills.
The students normally work at heights of about 35 feet, so during a
special welcoming event, the students were given the opportunity to
climb the ladder on Quint 1201.
Quint 1201 is a 75-foot ladder truck. The ladder was completely
extended at a maximum angle of 70+ degrees. In groups of two and
wearing safety belts, each student chose to climb the ladder, and
most spent time at the top enjoying the different perspective
offered by the height.
After enjoying grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, plus homemade ice
cream and other sweet treats, some of the students had fun under a
water spray from the elevated nozzle.
The event was organized by Pine Mountain Fire Chief Wayne Hollaway.
The FSU Flying High Circus students have performed many places in
the southeastern United States. They have also performed in Canada,
the West Indies, Europe, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and in
the US Virgin Islands.
