Training became the real deal for Pine Mountain firefighters on
Thursday, June 25, when a scheduled training class was interrupted
and firefighters dispatched to an overturned vehicle.
As part of the scheduled training, Pine Mountain and Hopewell
firefighters were at the Callaway Gardens resort conducting
pre-incident planning at the new Camp Callaway, Highlands and other
residential developments.
Squad 12, Quint 1201 and Engine 1202 were on the three-mile drive at
Callaway Gardens, approaching Camp Callaway when the alert tones
sounded, dispatching the department to a motor vehicle accident,
rollover, with ejection on Davis Lake Road.
Aggravating the situation, the EMS units stationed in Pine Mountain
and Hamilton were on other calls. Due to the nature of the accident,
plus some indication of multiple patients involved, EMS units from
Mountain Hill and Waverly Hall were dispatched, with the nearest
unit 20 minutes away.
As the alert tones sounded, Engine 501 had just entered the Beach
Gate at Callaway Gardens. Engine 501 immediately turned around and
headed to the scene. The other units responded from the three-mile
drive, but had to maneuver around the curving scenic roadway to
leave the Gardens.
First units on the scene reported that a pickup truck had left the
roadway, gone down a steep embankment and overturned before slamming
into the tree line. The truck came to a rest on its wheels.
Firefighters discovered a single patient, obtained vital signs, and
maintained c-spine control before applying a c-collar. Oxygen was
started and patient assessment was reported to the responding EMS
units. A decision was made to summon an air ambulance.
Quint 1201 was tasked with establishing a landing zone near the
Liberty Bell pool at F.D. Roosevelt State Park, which was the
nearest approved landing zone.
Under the direction of EMS Paramedic Supervisor Randy Downs, the
patient was extricated from the truck as the first ambulance arrived
on the scene.
The patient was treated at the scene and transported to the landing
zone. He was then airlifted to the Columbus Medical Center by Life
Saver air ambulance service.
