The Pine Mountain Fire Department helped save a house after it was
struck by lightning.
It was about 6 p.m., Friday, June 25, and a severe thunderstorm
struck the Pine Mountain area. The shortly after 6 p.m.,
firefighters from Hopewell and Pine Mountain were dispatched to a
structure fire on Nelson Road.
Lightning had apparently struck the house, or the electrical service
entrance, or both, and started a fire in the house.
A neighbor reported witnessing the lightning strike and three people
were in the house at the time of the incident. All three escaped the
burning structure without injury.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find smoke and fire showing in
the single-story wood frame structure. Most of the smoke and fire
was determined to be in the attic area.
With the nearest fire hydrants being in Pine Mountain, about four
miles away, tankers were summoned from Northwest Harris Fire
Department and Pine Mountain Valley Fire Department.
Firefighters attacked from the front of the structure, attempting to
push the fire back to where it had already burned.
There was substantial damage to the interior and section of the room
ceilings had to be removed to gain access to various hot areas.
The roof supports appeared to suffer extensive damage and the ladder
of Quint 1201 was used to gain safe access to the roof. An area of
the roof near the electrical service entrance was cut away to gain
access to an area burning under the shingles.
While the structure was saved, the interior of the house suffered
extensive damage. |
