The historic Rock Bridge was the scene of another motor vehicle
accident on Tuesday, January 17.
Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to World War
II, the Rock Bridge is located over Ga. Hwy. 354 just east of Pine
Mountain. The underpass is narrow and when two cars or light trucks
meet under the bridge, there is little room for error.
It was shortly after 10 a.m. and Tammy Copeland was heading east
driving a 2000 Cadillac DeVille. Traveling west was Sara Cole in a
2004 Honda.
As the two cars met under the bridge, their left front fenders
struck.
The left front fender of the Honda was folded back along the car
body and the left front wheel was ripped away, jamming under the car
body. With the frame of the car dragging on the road, Cole attempted
to steer it off the roadway but was only partially successful.
Though a much larger car, the Cadillac suffered the most serious
damage. Like the Honda, the left front fender of the Cadillac was
peeled away from the car. The left front tire was ripped away and
also jammed under the car. The left front door was jammed shut and
later removed by EMS personnel to get the driver out of the car.
The airbags in the Cadillac deployed during the collision and the
car drove into the guardrail, which kept it from possibly leaving
the roadway and going into a ravine.
Report of the accident brought officers of the Harris County
Sheriff’s Office, Harris County EMS, staff from F.D. Roosevelt State
Park and Pine Mountain Fire Department to the scene.
Squad 12 and Engine 1202 responded to the call.
Despite the significant damage to both cars, no visible injuries
were suffered by either driver.
Both drivers were treated at the scene and Cole was transported to
the Columbus Medical Center. |
