Making Christmas Brighter for Some Special People

BRINGING SMILES – Shown left to right on the control station of Pine Mountain Quint 1201 are Pine Mountain Fire Chief Andy Kober, Mayor Jim Trott, City Clerk Betsy Sivell, and two staff members of West Central Georgia Regional Hospital. Before the parade started, Santa and Mrs. Claus joined those on the control platform.

Christmas 2014, the Town of Pine Mountain and Pine Mountain Fire Department joined the City of Hamilton and Hamilton Fire Department in helping spread Christmas cheer.

The event was the Mayor’s Motorcade held at West Central Georgia Regional Hospital.

Sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association, the Mayor’s Motorcade begin in 1958 as an effort to bring Christmas cheer and help provide Christmas gifts to patients in Georgia’s mental health and retardation hospitals.

It was noted during the program that over 60 percent of the patients at West Central Georgia Regional Hospital have no contact with family members. In too many cases, families have abandoned them to the care of the state.

Without the Mayor’s Motorcade, for such patients and residents, Christmas would be just another day.

Cities participating in the Mayor’s Motorcade gather donations of gifts and clothing for the patients and residents of the hospitals.

In police vehicles and fire apparatus, gifts and clothing gathered by Hamilton and Pine Mountain were delivered to West Central Georgia Regional Hospital, along with contributions from other cities and agencies.

The program included Christmas music supplied by Grace Covenant Church trio and residents at the hospital. A luncheon was provided and those mayors attending were recognized, including Becky Chambers of Hamilton, and Jim Trott of Pine Mountain.

The Mayor’s Motorcade concluded with a parade around the West Central Georgia Regional Hospital campus. The parade included decorated golf carts, police vehicles and fire apparatus, and was attended by Santa and Mrs. Claus – both of whom rode on the control station on Pine Mountain Quint 1201.

Hamilton has been participating in this event for many years.

This was the first year for the Town of Pine Mountain and Pine Mountain Fire Department, but plans are already being made to participate again next year.

The Christmas gifts and parade brought considerable Christmas cheer to the patients and residents at West Central Georgia Regional Hospital.
