It is less about money and more about public relations.
Every April the Pine Mountain Merchant’s Association sponsors a
festival in the downtown area. The town closes part of Broad Street
and Commerce Avenue for the annual event.
On Saturday, April 4, Pine Mountain firefighters were found at the
festival grilling hot dogs and serving them with chips and drinks –
and all for donations.
Fire boots are placed on the table and customers contribute whatever
amount they want for however many dogs, chips and drinks they want.
Firefighters became involved in cooking at the festival in April
2014 when several food vendors abruptly cancelled. Festival
organizers were at a loss at the last minute attempting to find a
The fire department stepped up to the plate, or rather the table,
and the problem was solved.
Almost everybody likes hotdogs and Pine Mountain Fire Department has
been a food vendor since.
“We don’t make a lot of money cooking and serving hotdogs,” said
Fire Chief Andy Kober. “Much more important than how much we make,
is being there where people can see us. We show off the fire
apparatus, give fire safety stickers to children, and just be a part
of what is going on. If something bad happens, we are right there.”
The next festival in Pine Mountain is scheduled for September 26,
and Pine Mountain firefighters will be back, smiles on faces and
grilling hot dogs.
